Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
